Preview: Patience is the key for Black Stars against South Korea
Both sides enter the group H clash desperate for a win
The assignment for the Black Stars of Ghana on Monday at the Education City Stadium is clear. Beat South Korea or be eliminated from the World Cup 2022 Group H.
The Black Stars lost an entertaining game against Portugal 3-2 on the opening day while South Korea limped to a goalless draw against Uruguay.
The clash will mark the first meeting between the two sides since 2014 . Ghana won that game, a friendly, 4-0. For those who like to veer on the side of history in these matters, Monday’s match is the 10th between the two countries.
Ghana coach Otoo Addo, staying true to character did not delve into his tactical approach for the game during his pre-match press conference but it will not be lost on him that some things must change if the Black Stars are to make the next round of the World Cup for the first time since 2010..
Patience will be key
Desperate for points, there will be pressure for Ghana to start fast unlike they did against Portugal. A more aggressive formation has been mooted with Gideon Mensah and Tariq Lamptey mentioned as likely introductions at wing back. A more direct central attacking formation has also been practiced the past few days featuring Inaki Williams and Jordan Ayew. Uruguay hit the post a couple of times in their encounter against South Korea. That certainly would offer Ghana some hope.
South Korea’s backline led by Napoli’s Kim Min-Jae have proven resolute the past year. They have lost just once in ten games and rarely concede. Point is the Taeguk Warriors know how to defend. Rash attacks will not be the way to break them down.
Otto Addo and his wards will be better served by a patient, organised approach that balances the Black Stars’ improved defensive organisation and a more efficient attacking drive than was on display against the Portuguese .
Beware the press
South Korea is one of the better pressing teams at the World Cup . They adopt a high press and it is sustained with the team’s energetic approach. A Ghana team that has struggled to look after the ball in possession will have to improve in that aspect. South Korea is betting on forcing turn-overs and utilising their speedy transitions to punish Ghana. In Song Min-Kyu and and Song Heung-min there is no shortage of pace and goal threat once that happens.
Start another wide player
Against Portugal, Otto Addo was reliant on his wingbacks for width . In showing bravery against South Korea, he will have to ditch that for a more traditional approach. That means throw on an additional natural wide player . There is no shortage of options in that position with Kamaldeen Sulemana, Osman Bukari and Jordan Ayew all available able for selection. All of them are able to stretch teams and keep full backs busy. What they must not shun is their defensive duty when the Koreans have possession.
